Nick’s Story – OCD Action’s Help For Parents

Read Nick’s story about his struggle to support his bright and sociable daughter Lara, who has OCD. Lara dropped out of university, moved back home, and stopped seeing her friends.

Lara was clearly in real distress, and Nick realised she was trying desperately to distract her mind from the intrusive thoughts of OCD.

Nick explains his struggle to help her get better. They waited months to get a referral from her GP, only to be told the referral time couldn’t be guaranteed.

Parents of People with OCD and Navigating Services Group for Parents

Then, Nick discovered OCD Action’s website, and attended a Support Group: “Parents/Caregivers of adults with OCD” and the “Navigating Services Group for Parents”.

He found the knowledge and confidence to get Lara the help she needed. These groups help him understand exactly what Lara was entitled to through the NHS and how to advocate for her to get it.

Nick still can’t quite believe what happened next….

Having not left the house for two years, Lara went to see her favourite band, stepped out into the crowd and danced all night. Lara is now getting treatment and even taking her first steps to living independently again.
