      The Good News!

We know that starting a conversation with your GP about OCD can be really daunting. What if they don’t understand? What if they misinterpret your thoughts? Intrusive thoughts can be hard enough to deal with on your own, let alone share with someone else.
The good news is, you don’t need to go into detail with your GP. At your appointment, all you need to do is explain that you’re experiencing intrusive thoughts and compulsions, and that they’re impacting your life. This is enough for your doctor to refer you for an assessment for treatment, specifically Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). GPs are also able to prescribe SSRI medication.
If you’re feeling anxious about taking this step, you can bring someone with you to the appointment. We also have a GP card on our website (https://ocdaction.org.uk) that you can print to help start the conversation.
Remember that you deserve to be heard and get the right treatment
