Is this really ocd?

My dad has ocd and I want to help. I read that his ocd thoughts and feelings don’t define who he is and tried to get him to read that book too. But he thinks no one can understand how debilitating his thoughts or feelings are. He battled with thoughts of bad things in the past, but just because he thinks something doesn’t make it true or real, correct? I tried to tell him that even though his ocd thoughts and feelings exist  they don’t define him, I hope that was right? But he says he’s scared that he’ll give his thought too much power, which ocd wants him to do. Is this really his ocd speaking?
