Hi, I have had OCD since my teens and am now in my sixties. I have taken fluoxetine for years and find it helps greatly. I recently asked my Gp to be referred for CBT. I have now had the first of 5 sessions. I was quite surprised to be told that contamination OCD ( only) is due to a poor attachment to a primary caregiver during childhood. I was also told that I may have adult separation anxiety disorder and possibly not OCD. I am not sure what to make of this. The therapist seemed to think it was very important and the cause of my contamination OCD. However, I also have checking OCD, which it seems is not due to attachment issues.
I find this information a bit disturbing and am not sure how that idea is going to help with breaking free from OCD. I was hoping to focus on ERP. Actually, I was so surprised that I didn’t even ask if ERP would be involved but I will ask in the next session.
Has anyone else worked with the idea of poor attachment to a primary care giver / adult separation anxiety disorder for contamination OCD and has it been helpful?
