We are aware of the recent BBC Panorama documentary on SSRI medication which may have raised concerns for some people who are currently taking or are considering starting medication for OCD.

It’s important to note that many people find medication to be a valuable part of their recovery process. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends SSRIs for treating OCD. Medication can be used alone or in conjunction with the talking therapy Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP).

At OCD Action we have seen many people helped on their recovery journey by SSRIs. Nonetheless, the decision to take medication should be carefully considered in consultation with your doctor, weighing the pros and cons specific to your situation. It is also essential to periodically review all medications, usually every six months.

If you are thinking about discontinuing an SSRI, it is important to discuss this with your doctor and establish a plan for this. If you would like more information about medication for OCD, you can read our Medication Factsheet or reach out to OCD Action’s Helpline. Our Helpline volunteers can discuss treatment options and provide support in preparing for a conversation with your doctor.
