general questions

Is The Bridge a replacement for OCD treatment?
No. The Bridge is not therapy and does not replace CBT with ERP. It’s a psychoeducation and support programme for people who are waiting for treatment.

Do I need a formal OCD diagnosis to join?
No. You don’t need a diagnosis — you just need to be on a waiting list for OCD treatment (CBT with ERP specifically).

What is CBT with ERP, and how do I know if I’m on a waiting list for this particular treatment?

CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) with ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) is the recommended treatment for OCD.

If you’ve been referred for OCD treatment through the NHS, you should be on a waiting list for CBT with ERP. To check, you can contact your local NHS service and ask what specific treatment you’re waiting for.

If you’re unsure, or if you’ve been told something that doesn’t sound right, our Helpline can help you understand your options and support you to advocate for the right treatment.

Does it matter if the waiting list is NHS or private?
No. You can be waiting for NHS or private treatment.

What if I start treatment while taking part in The Bridge?
That’s absolutely fine. You can continue with The Bridge alongside treatment, or step away if you feel you’ve got what you need.

Does it cost anything to take part?
No. The Bridge is completely free.

Is The Bridge confidential?
Yes. The groups are confidential. Information is only shared if there are concerns about someone’s safety.

If I have additional health conditions, disabilities, learning or support needs, can I still take part, and how will I be supported?
When you apply, you’ll be asked if there’s anything you or your child might need to help you take part in the sessions. We’ll do our best to make reasonable adjustments and will talk this through with you as part of the application process.

How do I apply?
You can complete the first stage of the application here – just scroll down to the bottom of the page. If you have any questions before applying, you can email us at thebridge@ocdaction.org.uk.

for Young People

Do my parents or carers have to take part for me to join?
No. You can take part on your own.

Do I need permission to take part if I’m under 18?
Yes. If you’re under 18, we’ll need consent from your parent or carer.

Who will be in my group?
You’ll be with other young people close to your age. Groups are split into:

  • 14–17
  • 18–25

How many people are in each group?
Usually around 12 young people.

Will my parents be told what I say in my sessions?
No. Your group is confidential so you can speak openly.

Will I have a chance to meet others and make friends?

You’ll be part of an online group with other people who are also living with OCD, so you will meet others who understand what it’s like. However, The Bridge is a structured programme focused on learning and preparation for treatment, rather than a social or support group.

To help keep everyone safe, there won’t be any contact between group members outside of the sessions.

For Parents & Carers

Does my child have to take part for me to take part?
No. You can attend the parent/carer group independently.

Will I be told what my child shares in their group?
No. Young people’s groups are confidential so they can speak freely.

How many people are in each parent/carer group?
Usually up to around 20 parents and carers.

Is the parent group focused on supporting my child or on me as well?
Both. The sessions cover how to support your child without reinforcing compulsions, and how to look after your own wellbeing too.
