You are being invited to take part in a research study that is being conducted as part of an undergraduate degree. The project aims to investigate the effects of alcohol use in individuals with symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the reasons why individuals with OCD symptoms drink alcohol. Before you decide whether to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being conducted and what it will involve.
About the research
Who will conduct the research?
Emma Pirnay and Olivia McGowan (BSc Psychology students at the University of Manchester) under the supervision of Dr Lynsey Gregg (Lecturer in Clinical and Health Psychology, Division of Psychology and Mental Health, University of Manchester)
What is the purpose of the research?
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of alcohol use in individuals with symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and the reasons why individuals with OCD symptoms drink alcohol.
You have been invited to take part in this study because you have indicated that you currently experience or have previously experienced symptoms of OCD and that you drink alcohol at least once a month.
What would I be asked to do if I took part?
If you wish to take part in this study, you will first be asked to provide consent to agree to the conditions of participation.
You will then be provided with 3 separate questionnaires about; 1) OCD symptoms 2) Alcohol use 3) Reasons for alcohol use. In addition, you will be asked some general questions about your gender, age, ethnicity, employment status, education, relationship status, mental health history and weekly alcohol intake. Completion of the full survey should take no longer than 30 minutes.
Some of the questions included in the questionnaire about your mental health and alcohol use could cause you some distress. If you feel that the topics may be too upsetting, you do not have to participate. An example question in the questionnaire about your OCD symptoms is; “How much control did you have over your obsessive thoughts? How successful were you in stopping or diverting your obsessive thinking?”
Please complete the questionnaires in one sitting, it will not be possible to close your browser and come back to the study.
