Today was the first day that I was last to leave the office at uni. It was hard going, usualy when I leave there are others there, but today I was last to leave and was so hard. There is a notice saying last to leave make sure all the windows are closed and lights are off. Theres me already took 20-30 minutes to ensure my memory stick was in my bag and somehow didnt disappear from when I last checked 5 seconds before. Then turned off all the lights, pushed all the windows to ensure they locked. Check them a few times, check them again, panic a bit, leave the office walk down flight of stairs turn back to check again. Its not like I was last to leave the building, it was just the office for postgrads but couldnt leave. Why does it matter if a window isnt locked we are on like the fifth floor, if a light is left on it isnt gonna matter. I wish someone came in before I left but they didnt. I decided to go back and do some more work, was there for ages. Couldnt shake the what ifs

Thanks Max, my shrink was doing CBT with me but that was for my hygiene based stuff for a bit, I would only go back on medication if my blips were worse and more common. I was on medication for OCD around 16 years ago but it is better managed these days. I havent stressed leaving somewhere in many years when I was last to leave for the first time at when I lived with my brother. Its not so often. It is a pain but I am a half full kind of guy, my anxieties that day kept me in the office but was productive day!

Hi,

I sympathise ! My work place has just put up stickers in all of the toilets saying 'Now wash your hands', I don't know whether to laugh or cry - I wash them in the region of 90 times a day !!!! I choose to laugh most of the time, but ....

I also have to avoid being the last to leave the office, I could be there all night checking, whilst I notice other people leave fans. lights etc on without a second thought !

Try not to let it get you down !

Hi weeman. Sounds like classic checking behaviour. I understand the responsibility thing - shifting the responsibility to somebody else but this is a case of avoidance. You should leave when you want to leave and not be dictated to by OCD. The therapeutic response is to expose yourself to be the last to leave the office and leave without checking. Why not readand do the exercises for checking in Break Free From OCD it is written by staff from two centres of excellence for the treatment of OCD in England.

Thanks for the replies guys (just saw these replies there now!)
The good thing about the office is that its rare I am last to leave not as worried about going in so much. Was just a bad day at office that day.
I will have a look and check it out. Thanks for that
