Talking Mental Health

The University of Exeter’s student televisual YouTube channel recently published Talking Mental Health. The powerful short film, Directed by James Garbett, seeks to raise awareness of mental health in universities and reduce the stigma. Mental health can have a detrimental impact on the lives of students, leading some students to leave their studies behind. 2015 was a record year, where 2050 students with mental health problems dropped out of university. James and everyone involved in the production have done a fantastic job of creating a much needed, raw and honest film about mental ill health.

Some of the topics explored in the film include:

  • Removing the stigma surrounding mental health
  • The importance of talking about mental health
  • Challenging traditional views of “masculinity”
  • The important role counselling or therapy can play
